DISPUTE OVER HEATH LEDGER'S LIFE INSURANCE

You may recall we reported yesterday that Heath Ledger's family did the honourable thing by insisting that the late actor's entire estate was left to his two year-old daughter Matilda. Just to show that such actions are unusual in this world the company who underwrite his life insurance are refusing to pay up $10m to Matilda.

Anyone who has tried to replace a stolen DVD player will know what bastards insurance companies can be, so imagine how they get when there's a cool $10m involved in the pay out, despite the fact that they were more than happy to take the premiums in the first place.

ReliaStar Life Insurance say they are looking further into the claim as they feel the death might be suspicious. Or maybe even suicide. This is despite the fact that the inquest into Ledger's death ruled that he died from an accidental overdose. The word 'accidental' might be fairly conclusive to anyone involved in a reasonable business, but obviously not insurance.

Matilda's trustees have launched legal action against the sharks, who have responded by snarling that they will interview Mary Kate Olsen, the masseuse who was at Ledger's apartment the night he died and anyone who they can embarrass in order to make the claim go away.

Hollywood's a ruthless business but it can't hold a candle to the underwriters of insurance firms. Maybe Batman's next battle will be against the company that insured Bruce Wayne's mansion against fire and is now refusing to pay out?
